9780893816421: West from the Columbia: Views at the River Mouth

West from the Columbia is an essay in photographs about the meeting of a great river and the sea. The book is at once a celebration of beauty at the ocean's edge and a meditation on our relationship with it.

In the pictures the sea mirrors every condition through which our lives pass- fresh mornings, calm days, fogs, storms, and night-- and as in life, little is explained. Driftwood next to our feet is as mysterious as is the ship on the horizon.

Lewis and Clark arrived here, the farthest point in their exploration, in 1805. Report of their journey was instrumental in opening the American West for development. Since then we have destroyed large and diverse forests that once stood along the Columbia, and polluted the river with waste from cities, paper mills, and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

Though we now know that even the sea itself is finite-- nothing can be hidden-- we continue to look for hope at the ocean's shore. Might we be embraced, like the river, by so perfect a light?

Robert Adams is fond of an entry in one of Theodore Roethke's journals-- "I see what I believe."

About the Author:

Robert Adams has spent most of his life photographing the developed American West. In 1989 his work was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Adams and his wife Kerstin have for over thirty years vacationed in Astoria, Oregon, a small town by the Columbia River estuary, finding there a balance for the geography that has been his primary subject. Until recently he made few pictures on the beaches and headlands where they walked, but in late 1990, troubled both by the impending war in the Persian Gulf and by the quickening deterioration of Astoria, he began to record scenes on which he and Kerstin had relied.

From Publishers Weekly:

In a topographical style that eschews the sharply printed image or preconceived interpretive content, photographer and scholar Adams (Why People Photograph) here captivates with soft, moody, essentially repetitive views of an industrially endangered locale close to his heart?the Columbia River's confluence with the Pacific. One picture, of sand tracings and distant waders, tells a story, but for the most part we see sand, stones, sea grass, water and clouds in various stages of serenity and agitation. This is an excellent example of minimalist, non-art photography that will appeal to a considerable segment of the art-photography audience. Captions and notes on back pages identifying the picture subjects and their significance would have proved more useful to readers had they appeared in close proximity to the pertinent photos.
