9780894805288: Annie Stories: A Special Kind of Storytelling

Many of today's parents feel as helpless as a child when it comes to comforting their own children through the fears and crises that are a part of growing up. But Australian psychologist Doris Brett has developed a simple technique that all parents can use to help their children work through a problem or a crisis. Tell them a story. Not just any story-tell them ANNIE STORIES.

ANNIE STORIES are special. They're not happily-ever-after fairy tales of make believe; they're stories that deal with the real-life emotions of common childhood anxieties and difficult situations, such as starting school for the first time.

From the Back Cover:

Adults may know that dreams aren't real, dogs never kidnap children, and you can't get sucked down the bathtub drain. But try explaining that to a fearful five-year-old. Logic won't always work. Annie Stories will.

Originally conceived by Australian psychologist Doris Brett to calm the fears and build the confidence of her own daughter Amantha, Annie Stories is designed to allow children under ten to explore situations in an engaging, nonthreatening way through the experience of an imaginary boy or girl much like themselves.

Each story mirrors the real-life emotions and anxieties of a common childhood situation: nightmares, the birth of siblings, starting school for the first time, even coping with the death of a loved one. Throughout the book the author shows parents how to adapt each story to fit their own child and offers additional advice to help reinforce positive results.
