Archaeologist and numismatist Fischer-Bossert examines the silver Athenian coin, the decadrachm. He gives the historic reasons for the minting before describing the known coins and dies. Provenance of the finds is treated, including the difficulty of proving it for coins sold at auction. The first forgeries were made in the early 1800s, just after the first decadrachm was identified. This is followed by a detailed catalogue of all coins known to exist, along with dies, lead trial pieces and examples of models for the bust of Athena. Known forgeries are also listed.
