Duke Paoa Kahanamoku first came to the swimming world's attention in 1911 where he set 50 & 220 yard swim records that led to a trip to the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. He went on to make a name for himself in surfboarding and diving. He was eventually defeated in 1924 by Johny Weismuller. He soon switched to films - appearing as a bronzed adonis in many MGM productions. He became a national hero in his home island and died in 1978. These 279 pages are his BIO - complete with b/w photos that incl. JFK, King Gustaf, 5 brothers, and Arthur Godfrey. Cond : Paper wrapper is white w/ gilt lettering. Front cover graphic (full-page) is Duke on his surfboard in an art-deco image by Charles Bartlet. Fore corners are sli. soft or soiled. One small bump in front cover. Colours bright, spine excellent, binding tight. Text block exceedingly clean. No names, marks, creases, nor tears. DECIDEDLY giftable !! Quote (p. 71) : " .
