Suddenly, however, the incomprehensible swept over them like a tidal wave....the grand scale of the world war became immediate and real, reaching nearly everyone in the country. Through the Sullivans, people learned that war means real human suffering, and that anyone can suffer. They could measure the cost of America's war efforts in the Sullivans' despair, displayed in newsreels and photos. And they could consider more directly and urgently than ever before the grim possibility that their own sons, fathers or brothers might not come home.

The Sullivans reflected more than sadness and loss, however. The public viewed them as bedrock Americans, possessed of simple faith in their country and the rightness of its cause, who believed without question the idealistic notion that loss of loved ones in the nation's defense is a burden worth bearing, part of the cost of victory. 'We stick together,' was not just the family's motto; it summed up their interpretation of the nation's creed.
