Victoria ("Tortie")Eveleigh was born and raised in London, but was always a country girl at heart. Her love of horses began with riding lessons round Hyde Park in London, and blossomed when her Grandmother, who owned a farm on Exmoor, bought her a pony called Jacko for her tenth birthday. Tortie, the youngest of four children, went to boarding school at Benenden in Kent. After she left school she spent a year travelling round Australia and working on farms before studying for a BSc at St. Andrew's University and a MSc from Wye Agricultural College. On leaving Wye she went to live at West Ilkerton, her Grandmother's Farm, and worked for the Exmoor National Park Authority.
Christopher ("Chris") Eveleigh and Tortie were married in 1986, and they have farmed West Ilkerton since then. Their son, George was born in 1987 and a daughter, Sarah, was born in 1990.
West Ilkerton is a 91 ha farm in the hills above Lynton, Exmoor. Chris and Tortie farm organic sheep and cattle and they provide self - catering farm holidays. Horses have always played an important part in their lives. The three Shire horses on the farm are used for horsedrawn tours over Exmoor, and they own a herd of free - living Exmoor ponies which are kept on moorland adjacent to the farm. At present they are working on the sequel to "Katy's Exmoor".
