Shorter, but no less informed articles, on Papa John s prodigies Jamme, the lovely Sandy Denny, Elektra experimentalist David Stoughton, heavy weight trippers Sainte Anthony s Fyre and even a dash of fine new music in the form of the elfin Bart Davenport and eccentrics The Smiles & Frowns. Finally, the icing on the cake has to be our brilliant 20 Questions with The Lovin Spoonfuls John B Sebastian. Phew!!!!

It s been scientifically proven it s not possible to make great music if you have hair stuck above your top lip. The penny seems to have dropped at Shindig! this month who ve had a smart revamp and the new issue is the most mod friendly for ages: articles/interviews with The Birds, The Remains and The Purple Hearts, an in-depth look at Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush, half a million reviews and barely a moustache in sight. That would be enough in itself but it now comes with a Happening! supplement focusing on current bands and events to keep things moving forward. Plus there s more a 21 track download (Mojo take note) featuring the likes of the Len Price 3, The Fallen Leaves and Race Horses. The best music magazine just got better. --monkey-picks.blogspot.com

May I recommend a title from across the pond called Shindig!. I d like to bring this magazine to your attention not just because they get to be a little more comprehensive with more unknowns, could-have-beens, and the occasional never-was bands, but in this particular issue they ve added a second title packaged to the magazine called Happening! that covers new music, scenes, fashions, etc.. and it proves itself well worth the read. Plus, they ve started offering a free zip-file of 21 tracks of songs with each issue, which you can check out here. And in particular, this issue has a feature on the Remains, who are just about the greatest band from the early Beatles era still making a go of it today (who isn t the Sonics, that is). --electriccomicbook.wordpress.com
