Born in Leeds, Yorkshire, John's early life was influenced by the Jesuits who taught him value of excellence. At the age of five he could already draw in perspective and he sold his first painting at the tender age of thirteen to the teacher who lived next door. Coming from industrial Leeds he fell in love with the Yorkshire Dales, where at the age of fifteen, he saw the sparkling clean river Wharfe and it changed his life. Eventually, after ten years as a college lecturer in English and communications, he became a full-time artist. His studio in Masham, deep in the Yorkshire Dales, was opened by fellow Yorkshireman, Sir Michael Parkinson, who had invited John to stay with him at his home, where he painted his portrait. His most famous being The Madonna and Child which was featured by the B.B.C. on Christmas Day, and on Sky News over Boxing Day. Principally a portrait painter John has painted many famous subjects including film stars, politicians, army generals, captains of industry and members of the Royal families from many countries. His half hour programme Out of the Crowd where he painted a portrait of the actor Michael York was featured on ITV`s Pick of the Week. His work has taken him all over the world, from Siberia, where he was invited to design costumes for the opera; to Mombasssa in Kenya, and to Costa Rica for private commissions. He also painted a portrait of the Peculier of Masham a mediaeval character in full costume, in St. Mark's square during the Venice carnival for Yorkshire TV. His book The Tale of Lundravar the Dragon is a story that reflects John's journey through life as an artist. Most of the characters in the book exist, or have existed, and he hopes that the general philosophy that inspired the book, will touch some part in all of us.
