Of all film genres, 'X' is possibly the one that lends itself best to the use of posters as a promotional medium. Screaming taglines, provocative titles and scantily-clad forms are all elements that can be used to best advantage in poster form. They are wonderful period pieces that evoke the temptations and taboos of a bygone age. This magnificent coffee table book is the 10th anniversary, new, expanded, 'complete volume' of Nourmand and Marsh's bestselling release, with accompanying text by renowned writer Peter Doggett.
Featuring over 350 orgasmic posters from the Golden Age of the X-rated movie, this doorstop book is a new and expanded celebration of Nourmand and Marsh's cult best seller. Finally released after more than a decade, this is the "complete volume" of X-rated adult movie posters of the 60s and 70s.
Sex sells! Since moving pictures were invented, nothing promotes a movie better than unashamedly sexual advertising. X-rated adult movies reached their peak in the 1960s and 70s, with films like Debbie Does Dallas and Deep Throat. This was the period that saw X move into arthouse cinemas for the first time, attracting a fashionable young crowd and critical praise. This 'porno chic' movement had an air of credibility that had never existed before (or since). The stars of the genre - Marilyn Chambers, Linda Lovelace, John Holmes - became the new A-list and (almost) household names. When the softcore masterpiece Emmanuelle was released in 1974, one of the most respected designers in the business - the original Mad Man Steve Frankfurt - was even persuaded to work on the poster campaign. Of course, such sophistication was an exception. More often than not the posters were crudely printed "cut and paste" collages featuring the over-endowed regulars of the B-movie circuit. Scantily-clad forms abound suspended above screaming taglines and provocative titles, like the not-so classic The Love Robots, Flesh Gordon, Kiss Me Mate, Hot Lunch, Danish Pastries, Maid in Sweden, and Oh! so many more.
Gloriously retro, today these posters remain an inspiration for graphic designers and creatives, an invaluable time-capsule for historians ... and an irresistible page-turner for the rest of us. To quote Steve Frankfurt, "X was never like this."

This magnificent book is the new, expanded, complete edition of Nourmand and Marsh's cult bestseller, with text by renowned writer Peter Doggett. The 1960s and '70s were the Golden Age of the X-rated movie. For the first time, these films were shown in mainstream cinemas to a fashionable, young crowd. The -porno chic- movement around films like Deep Throat (1972), The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976) and Debbie Does Dallas (1978) gave skin flicks an air of credibility that had never existed before. Johnny Carson and Bob Hope talked about Deep Throat on TV, and respected artists became involved in promotional campaigns for adult films. Of all film genres, the X-rated movie is possibly the one that lends itself best to the use of posters as a promotional medium. Screaming taglines, provocative titles and scantily clad bodies are all elements that can be used to great advantage in poster form. Even though many of the adult movies of the '60s and '70s have faded into cinematic history, their posters remain an inspiration for graphic designers. And today they are wonderful, joyful period pieces that evoke the temptations and taboos of a bygone age of suspender belts, stockings and eye-popping, gravity-defying brassieres.
