Hayashi Seiichi (b. 1945) was a leading artist in the hotbed of countercultural activity that was Tokyo in the 1960s and '70s. Though active as an animator, illustrator, and designer, he is best known for his ground breaking avant-garde comics, which crossed traditional Japanese aesthetics and popular music with Pop Art and New Wave cinema, addressing such diverse issues as postwar trauma, Americanisation, the Vietnam War, and youth angst and sexuality.
