James grew up in the Midwest U.S.A. and is one of five children. He is in private practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. He also is a licensed professional counselor, and a national board certified clinical mental counselor. He is a past president of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT). James enjoys public speaking and providing therapy and coaching.
