9780963713964: This Path We Share: Reflecting on 60 Years of Marriage

This is the book that any grandmother, mother, sister, or friend will want to give to a new bride...and to herself. How did a farm boy from North Dakota and a willful 17 year old from South Dakota forge a relationship that has lasted more than six decades? How did they withstand tragedy, unprecedented social upheaval, breast cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, and 400,000 miles of travel together? And why do they say, after all that has happened, And so we lived happily ever after? Lois Hjelmstad, award-winning author of Fine Black Lines and The Last Violet, now shares her poignant story of a marriage that has thrived against the odds. Richly detailed, with a deep understanding of life, this memoir is a gift to any couple--unmarried, newly married, and those wishing to reclaim or retain what they have had. Some bits of core advice from This Path: Nurture your primary relationship tenaciously. Fall in love with each new person your mate becomes. Create a post-parenthood marriage. Reinvent your life to fit changing personal and societal circumstances. Foster a lifelong sexual connection.

About the Author:

In 1990 Lois Tschetter Hjelmstad planned to continue teaching piano and music theory to children as long as she could stand in her tennis shoes. But the discovery of three primary cancers in her left breast shocked her right down to the toes of those tennis shoes. The night before her first mastectomy, she wept as she wrote the poem, Goodbye, Beloved Breast. Other poems followed. Her oncologist said, Do something with these. So she wrote Fine Black Lines: Reflections on Facing Cancer, Fear and Loneliness (1993, 2003). Then she traveled over 400,000 miles (mostly by car) and spoke more than 550 times in all 50 United States, Canada, and England. She appeared nude from the waist up on the cover of the October 1993 issue of Colorado Woman News in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She participated in Living with Cancer: A Message of Hope, directed by Fred Silverman, and several other cancer documentaries. She wrote articles, including pieces for American Medical News, Health Progress, PARENTHOOD, Your Health, and an op-ed in Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In 2001, Lois was featured in Rosie Magazine (formerly McCall's) and subsequently appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell Show. She was the 2005 recipient of the coveted Sue Miller Day of Caring Award in Denver. When her mother died on Mother's Day in 1995, she began writing The Last Violet: Mourning My Mother, Moving Beyond Regret, published in 2002. At their 50th wedding anniversary, Lois handed her husband, Les, a packet of poems and promised to write the story of their love. It took a while, but in April 2010, This Path We Share: Reflecting on 60 Years of Marriage completes her trio of memoirs. Lois and Les live in Englewood, Colorado. They have four children, twelve grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Lois loves walking, entertaining family and friends, being involved with children, and thinking about the larger issues of life. Her mission is to bring clarity, validation, and joy to others.
