Gideon Ferebee, Jr. has been writing poetry since he was 16, when he attended the Bronx High School of Science in New York City where he was born. Gideon self-published, "OUT! To Lead," in 1994, a compilation of 15 essays that was published through the subsidy house Brownell & Carroll Publishers in Newport Beach, California. "OUT! To Lead," is a call to action for the African American lesbian and gay community. His essay, "OUT! To Change The World," appeared in the anthology,Letters to Our Children, Lesbian and Gay Adults Speak to a New Generation, compiled and edited by Larry Dane Brimmer and published by Franklin Watts, a division of Grolier Publishing in 1997.
Gideon, the last of ten children born to his mother and father, was the first in the family to attain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1975 from Valparaiso University where he majored in theater. Since moving to Washington, D.C. in the mid-seventies, he has pursued his love of theater, acting and directing in the D.C. Black Repertory Company, The Minority Arts Ensemble and Station to Station, a collective of black male writers he helped to found in 1980. Working through the DC Public Access channel he has produced videos with Dreamkeeper Productions documenting the annual Black Gay Pride Festival (1992) and experimental videos of poetry performances including Disappearing Act, written by Chasen Gaver and featuring Larry Duckette.
He has lived with a diagnosis of HIV since 1989; and, suffered a near fatal stroke in 1998. In March of 2000, his partner of 16 years, Leroy H. Sutton, Jr. passed from complications due to AIDS.
Gideon’s dream of launching Nappyheaded Archives by publishing this collection of poems has, in part, kept him afloat over the last 3 trying years of his life. He hopes to publish and produce other African American, gay and lesbian and challenged and marginalized voices in the years ahead.
Searching For The Boy is dedicated to Leroy H. Sutton, Jr. in the spirit of this quest.
