What began as a young girl's innocent questions about mortality and the human condition has been answered by Herzl Marks in this story of his family's journey in the early 1900's from Eastern Europe to the southern tip of Africa. In The Cheeks tracks the traditional Jewish roots of the Mordukhovitz and Janowski families as they fled the pogroms of The Pale of Settlement in Czarist Russia for the freedom of the goldeneh medineh of Cape Town, South Africa. Marks shares the compelling saga of a plucky Jewish family struggling to build their legacy long before the time of Apartheid. From their poor beginnings, the Marks family grows in number and wealth until the anarchy in newly decolonised Africa followed by the massacre at Sharpeville, changes everything. Marks looks to escape a threatening future once again.
Herzl Marks was born in 1932 and raised in Cape Town, South Africa.
