Few people have been as touched by the Tennessee River's beauty as much as Ron Lowery. For the past 30 years, he and his wife, Sue, have not only lived along it, but using a special open cockpit airplane that he built, have flown hundreds of miles above the river and its tributaries. From thousands of feet in the air he has witnessed the artistry of the curvy, glistening river below. Floating above the tree tops, he's soared beside eagles and watched as deer quenched their thirst at the river's edge.By piloting his own plane, he can virtually live in the sky, capturing just the right lighting and weather effect for each picture.Lowery reveals, “I believe that even though you can experience and photograph the river from the ground or in a boat, it's an aerial perspective that reveal its true soul.” “I built the plane for two reasons: to photograph and to explore. Though you can experience and photograph the river from the ground or in a boat, aerial perspectives reveal breathtaking characteristics of its beauty and behavior that are a marvel to see,” he continues. “Over the years I have taken many aerial photos of the Tennessee River. Because of my growing fascination with rivers and the praise these images have received, I gained the confidence to retrace the Lewis and Clark trail across the American West by air for the purpose of producing a photography and adventure book. Even though that book was tied to a well-known event – the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition – it turned out to be more of a book about rivers than a recounting of history. Now, with the national success of Chasing Lewis and Clark Across America, we are proud to release our next book, Tennessee River: Sparkling Gem of the South— one that brings us home to pay tribute to the magnificent Tennessee River.Ron Lowery has over forty years as a professional photographer and pilot. He is internationally recognized for his creative photography and conceptual illustration skills

Streams, shorelines and shoals . . . in the first-ever photo book about the Tennessee River. Although most people near the Tennessee River have their favorite fishing, boating, swimming and camping areas, few people see and understand the river's vastness and beauty like photographer/pilot, Ron Lowery. Because he felt the Tennessee River with all its lakes and tributaries was underappreciated, he devoted 13 years using his camera and artistic eye to connect us all environmentally and emotionally to this great river. From the Appalachian Mountains to the river's merger 652 miles away with the Ohio River, there was an abundance of scenic beauty to tease his creative spirit. From his vantage point in the sky, Lowery captures nature's artistry along the Tennessee River while flying his open-cockpit plane named Cloud Chaser. Virtually living in the sky for hundreds of hours allows him to observe the landscape under many different and dramatic lighting effects. The path of the river, its estuaries and tributaries, the cityscapes and landscapes all tell the important story of this “sparkling gem of the South.”
