‘Reinventing Me’ Book I tells of Joan Small’s childhood in Western Australia – from ‘The Bush’ to the city of Perth, and the family’s move at the end of 1956 to the small isolated mining town of Tennant Creek in the centre of the Northern Territory – a frontier town of tin sheds and wide streets with no piped water, and therefore no gardens or green vegetation – just a wide strip of WWII bitumen down the centre of the dusty main street, surrounded by rocky countryside with prickly spinifex grass and anthills like tombstones. Joan’s mother had been told about ‘Frangipani as high as the house’ but discovered the only straggling Frangipani was at the airport. Even more isolated was the gold mine of Nobles Nob – ten miles from the town. This was a shock to Joan’s mother, but Joan loved the opportunity of ‘two lives’ – her life at school in Perth, and her holidays spent in Tennant Creek. The story takes the reader from Joan as a shy and sad child, overwhelmed by her father and older brother – a loner and bullied at school - to her burgeoning independence, the positive influence of the Girl Guide Movement, and her decision to leave her family and move to Adelaide to live with her friend’s family. Book II continues the journey to this next stage in Joan’s life where she meets further challenges and blossoms into a young woman.
