L'autore:
Allen W. Smith, Ph.D. has devoted much of his adult life to battling economic illiteracy and promoting economic education. He has written numerous books in his effort to help readers understand economics and government economic policy. His high school text book, Understanding Economics, published by Random House, was used in more than 600 schools in 48 states. His layman’s guide, Demystifying Economics: The Book That Makes Economics Accessible to Everyone, was described by ALA Booklist as, “...An excellent resource for beginners as well as those seeking to review their understanding of economic principles.” After teaching economics to college students for 30 years, Smith retired as Professor of Economics at Eastern Illinois University in 1998 to become a full-time writer. For the past five years he has been immersed in researching Social Security funding and writing about the subject. Smith’s book The Alleged Budget Surplus, Social Security, and Voodoo Economics, was published in 2000. Smith, who holds a Ph.D. degree in economics from Indiana University, has appeared on national TV and more than 150 talk radio shows
Dalla seconda/terza di copertina:
Allen W. Smith’s explosive book, The Looting of Social Security: How The Government Is Draining America’s Retirement Account, shocked many Americans when it was released by Carroll & Graf in January 2004. It exposed a little-known government practice that President Bush now routinely admits in his Social Security speeches. The government has been embezzling the Social Security surplus and spending it as if it were general fund revenue for the past 22 years! ALA Booklist described The Looting of Social Security as "...a scathing account of massive fraud on the part of our nation’s leaders, who have plundered every cent of the Social Security Trust Fund surplus that was specifically earmarked for the retirement of the baby boomers..." The Boston Globe wrote: "With dismal clarity, Smith lays out the step-by-step history of how a national pension plan was transformed into an outright shakedown of working people...." Social Security: The Attempt to Kill It is even more explosive. In addition to updating the looting fraud that is still taking place on a daily basis, Smith releases a new bombshell. In 1983, representatives of the Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation developed a strategic long-term plan to destroy Social Security and replace it with private accounts. The plan was published in the Fall, 1983 edition of The Cato Journal with the title, "Achieving a Leninist Strategy." The plan, which calls for waging "guerilla warfare against Social Security and its supporters," specifically sets out a game plan for replacing the current Social Security system with private accounts. This game plan is clearly the same one that President Bush is following as he tries to privatize Social Security.
