9780977411719: Credit Analysis 102

This book was created for financial services professionals who seek to excel at their trade and become outstanding performers in their fields. The ability to crunch numbers is the first and very essential skill that a credit or financial analyst learns. Yet, this skill is only a small fraction of your success story. This book synthesizes timeless knowledge within the five key qualities that are not taught or discussed in organizations. Why? Businesses and managers do not have the skills, patience, and motivation to continuously educate their less tenured colleagues on matters that are hard to quantify. This is where this book is intended to make a difference. It was written based on the author’s and many other individuals’ decades of business experiences that can only be described as learning from your own bumps and bruises. The goal is to provide you with the expertise that will make your learning more effective and you, personally, more successful than you would be on your own. While a source of qualitative information, this book should not be confused with motivational or other similar books. This book is for individuals who aspire to be at the top of their field and want to benefit from the advice that is rarely shared. The rest is up to you and you only in putting this knowledge into practice.

About the Author:

Neil Berdiev started his financial services career at Fidelity Investment's brokerage arm. He then made a transition into commercial banking, working for national, superregional, and community banks such as FleetBoston Financial (now Bank of America), Citizens Financial Group (subsidiary of RBS), Cambridge Trust Company, and Boston Private Bank. He worked in a wide range of roles starting as a credit analyst and progressively advancing to take on more responsibilities that included structuring, underwriting, and approving of senior debt financing opportunities, credit review of commercial loan portfolios, and loan portfolio management. During his banking career, Neil participated in the analysis and approval of hundreds of financing opportunities in excess of $1 billion and reviewed the credit quality of over $2 billion in debt obligations.

Neil received an MBA from Babson College and for a number of years he has been actively involved with the Risk Management Association and is on the board of its New England Chapter. During the last ten years, he had consulted privately-held companies on issues of financial management. In 2005-2006, Neil wrote and published a nationally-recognized Loan Financing Guide for Small Business Owners on debt financing, targeting owners and finance managers of privately-held companies with $0 to $15 million in revenue. He is also the author and publisher of Credit Analysis 102 that was released in 2012 that is gaining popularity among junior to mid-career banking professionals and their managers. Last but not least, Neil has written numerous articles for or has been quoted in regional and national publications such as the RMA Journal; L.A. Times; Banker & Tradesman; American City Business Journals; Inc.com; Entrepreneur.com; and Entrepreneur Magazine.

Review:

Congratulations to Neil Berdiev for recognizing the need for sharing the experiences and life-lessons that frequently go unnoticed, yet offer some of the best insights into a field that is highly techincal, yet also is considered an art. Coming from the more analytical side of the house, I think this book will be a great resource for analysts that seek to expand their understanding of the bigger picture. I will strongly recommend this read to my staff.
Don B., SVP and Credit Administration Director, MA-based bank

Neil Berdiev draws on a wide range of experiences to give the reader tools to use, questions to ask, and strategies for the development of his or her career path. The author provides a wide variety of examples from his own experience to reinforce points.  The book also has information and guidelines for managers and upper management that will enable the existing leaders to foster the development of the next generation of leaders to come.
I would recommend this book to any analyst and any supervisor as a template for developing an excellent analyst team.
Hans H., AVP / Sr. Analyst, MN-based bank

This is a great resource for new credit analysts trying to figure out where they fit in the industry, where they would like to be, and how to get there.  Banking has been my career, but I have to admit there were insights in this book that I wish I had had earlier.  I would recommend this book to anyone starting a career, not only in credit, but anyone starting out on a professional career path.  It would also be a great read for managers of a fledgling staff.
Joanne F., Credit Analysis and Loan Policy Manager, MA-based bank.
