W. Hope Hodgson was an English author who produced a large body of work consisting of essays, short fiction, poetry, and novels, spanning several overlapping genres including horror, fantasy, and science fiction. He also attracted some notice as a photographer and achieved some renown as a bodybuilder. He died in World War I at the age of 40. H. P. Lovecraft was an American author of horror, fantasy, and science fiction, especially the subgenre known as weird fiction. His guiding literary principle was what he termed “cosmicism,” the idea that life is incomprehensible to human minds and that the universe is fundamentally inimical to the interests of humankind. He is best known for his Cthulhu Mythos, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore.
