9780979047152: Unlocking Tannisho: Shinran's Words on the Pure Land Path

Tannisho (Lamenting the Deviations) is a beloved classic text of Pure Land Buddhism that points the way to real happiness. As a record of the words of the extraordinary Japanese Buddhist monk Shinran, who lived some 800 years ago, Tannisho has become the mainstay of the Japanese spirit. Hundreds of commentaries have been published on the meaning of Tannisho, but Unlocking Tannisho is the only definitive commentary, based entirely on Shinran's own writings. The original Japanese version of Takamori's Unlocking Tannisho (2008) has been unusually successful for a book about Buddhism, with 200,000 copies sold to date. Rendered beautifully into English by Juliet Winters Carpenter, who stands unchallenged as today's finest translator of Buddhist texts, Unlocking Tannisho will help you to uncover the answer to the question, "What is real happiness?"

About the Author:

Kentetsu Takamori has dedicated his life to faithfully conveying the teachings of Shinran (1173-1263), the founder of True Pure Land Buddhism. He has lectured throughout Japan and worldwide on Buddhism for more than sixty years. He is the author of several best-selling titles in Japanese and the chair of the Buddhist organization Jodo Shinshu Shinrankai.

Review:

Shinran, a 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk, is acknowledged as the founder of the Jodo Shinsu sect of Pure Land Buddhism; the Tannisho, also known as the Lamentations of Divergences, is a record of his thought. This new version was prepared for Japanese readers by Takamori, the chair of the Jodo Shinsu organization, in 2008. A hit in Japan, it abbreviates some portions of the Tannisho while expanding upon and explaining others. Both Takamori and translator Carpenter emphasize the misinterpretations to which Shinran’s ideas are prone, and, for the Buddhist reader, this lavishly illustrated book should go a long way toward expounding a direct and truly Japanese understanding of Shinran’s teaching. VERDICT Takamori’s version of the Tannisho should make an important addition to any library on Japanese Buddhism, academic or personal.  --Library Journal Review - July 1, 2011

“Tannisho (Lamenting the Deviations) is a major Pure Land Buddhist classic. Although it is little known in the West, it is one of the most important texts to appear in the history of religion.

In Unlocking Tannisho, Juliet Winters Carpenter’s skillful translation and Kentetsu Takamori’s unambiguous commentary clarify the essential meaning of this text that offers a universal spiritual challenge for modern people.”

--Dr. Alfred Bloom (author of The Essential Shinran: A Buddhist Path of True Entrusting)
