9780980315509: The Iron Fairies Vol 1

Volume 1 is the first volume of The Iron Fairies Trilogy. The books are a series of three journals written by one of the miners who worked in the mine site making fairies. The miner describes his life with his work colleagues in making magical little iron fairies.
Vol 1 takes you down into the underground world of the miners and lets you see the daily grime of making fairies and mining the ore from the pits. It gives you a brief description of some of the fairies including descriptions of their personalities. The pages contain detailed sketches of machines and cave systems in the mine.
In the pages of the book, there is a secret Blue Fairy Code that the naughty blue fairies have drawn into the miner's journal. After you read Vol 1, you can then try and crack the code left in the pages and play the first stage of the online game and receive the first part of the key that will lead you to solving the secret of The Iron Fairies!

Review:

Do you believe in Fairies? Well, Australian author Ashley Sutton offers you a chance to collect some of your own. In his book, the Volume 1 of The Iron Fairies series, you, the reader, become part of the adventure!
It seems some children who play in a magical garden have made their way into some underground mines, and you, reader, are needed to help the Fairies they find there escape their imprisonment. If you buy Volume 1 of the Iron Fairies it must be read very carefully. Hidden in the pages are answers to secret codes. To help a Blue Fairy escape the casting room where she has been locked up, you must collect the 3 pieces of the key, which will unlock the door to the casting room.
Once you have saved her, the company will send you a special Iron Fairy that is not sold in any store! However, to get each piece of the key you ll need to visit The Iron Fairies website and make your descent into the mine, pass through 5 doors and crack a Blue Fairy Code.
Each iron fairy is a work of art hand crafted and made from Iron Ore (steel). No two fairies are the same. If your fairy has a green rusted tone it is considered a well behaved fairy, whereas a blue tone means she is cheeky and naughty.
When you purchase an iron fairy you are asked to place her where she can see the morning sunlight. Your fairy comes with a tiny envelope of fairy dust; which you sprinkle on her to make a wish.
In order to make your way through the aforementioned 5th door, you ll need to purchase 3 fairies. The rest of the information you ll need is found in the book. The book, I must warn you, which takes a slightly poetic tone, is a bit like a reading comprehension test. I also suggest that unless you have great eyesight, you get hold of a magnifying glass.
Sutton's poems are easy enough to read, but it s the comments from the children; who have wandered around the underground mines and left clues about some little old miners as well as the fairies themselves, that get difficult.
All of the 16 fairies available to date have their own names. They are: Jade, fairy of the Jacaranda; Hannah, fairy of the grape vine; Amy, fairy of the rose; Scarlet, fairy of the creeper; Raine, fairy of the gum tree; Emma, fairy of the cheeky blossom; Brook, fairy of the Bougainvillea; Vita, fairy of the dirt (blue); Mouna, fairy of the wind and rain (blue); Sarah, fairy-so-flirting and also the tallest (blue); Alana, fairy of the sour grass; Erin, fairy of the pond; Lily, fairy of the garden floor; Chante, fairy of the tree fern; and Amy, fairy of the rose (two versions - standing and sitting).
A recommended buy for the art value, the fun, or the fairy in your life. --Edge Boston

Presented as a story and the journal of one of the miners who makes iron fairies, these are beautiful books with iron covers. Based on the orignal story and illustrations by Ashley Sutton. Set in the 1900s a group if children came across 3 rusted books in the garden that told the story of an old cottage in Western Australia. Underneath the cottage are hidden tunnels of grumpy old men who make iron fairies representing parts of the garden above them.
Sometimes though the ore isn't in the right concentration and a blue fairy is made. These are mischevious and naughty and they try to get the miners to make more of them. Throughout the books are clues that reveal a key for an online game which I haven't figured out yet. The third book is currently awaiting release and I will defintely be getting a copy when it comes out.
The Iron Fairies can be found here and you can get the iron fairies as well as the books themselves. These would make a great gift and feel one of a kind and special. Ideal for anyone who likes their books to look and feel special. --Rhinoa's Ramblings

The Iron Fairies -- Vol. 1, by Ashley Sutton, looks like a book but it's secretly a game. It isn't a traditional novel, but a journal with poems, drawings, notes and tiny scribblings viewable only with a magnifying glass. The diary, purportedly written by miners who live in a network of caves beneath a garden, contains secret codes that can be used to navigate the mysterious underground fairy world on a companion Iron Fairies Web site. Beware, though: Good fairies will help you on your way, but naughty nymphs will give you trouble --IndyStar.com
