Recensione:
The Kriegsmarine had a number of awards and badges that were created between 1939 and 1945. Many of them were designed by well-known artists, engravers, and designers. All naval units were eligible for some type of award, although not every department was covered by an individual badge. War badges were produced in two basic forms: either as a badge to be worn on the breast or as a clasp worn above the left breast pocket. The majority of these badges were made of metal, although in some cases cloth variants could be purchased at the wearer's expense. During the early stages of the war, these badges were generally made from a bronze alloy (called Tombakbronze) or brass, with a very high quality mercuric fire-gilded finish. Later, they were produced in fine-grain zinc and, towards the end of the war, in very poor quality pot metal known in Germany as war metal (Kriegsmetall). These later war badges used a cheap lacquer known as Brennlay (Brennluck). A certificate or some type of document usually accompanied the badge itself at the award ceremony. There was no real attempt to standardize the documents so that by the end of the war, no documents were awarded. However, such awards were recorded in the man's paybook. Miniature stick pin versions of these badges exist, for wearing as lapel pins on civilian clothing. Also covered are the controversial Bacqueville or French-made war badges of which only a small number were manufactured. The Table of Contents consists of the following chapters: The U-Boat War Badge, The Destroyer War Badge, The Minesweeper War Badge, The Blockade Runner Badge, The Auxiliary Cruiser War Badge, The Fleet War Badge, The S-Boat War Badge, The Marine Artillery War Badge, The U-Boat Front Clasp, The Marine Front Clasp, Bacqueville-The French Made War Badges, The Cloth Versions, The Narvik Shield in Gold, The Miniatures, The Diamond Badges, The Kriegsmarine Award Pennants, The Proficiency and Combat Badges of the Small Attack Craft, and The Honor Roll Clasp of the Kriegsmarine. THE KRIEGSMARINE AWARDS: VOLUMES 1 AND 2 is a very detailed and well written account explaining the awards and badges of Hitler's Navy. Authors Sascha Weber and Gerhard P. Skora have put together a one of a kind two-volume set that not only shows their depth of research but also their dedication to historical accuracy as well as to military collecting. This two-volume set is filled with detailed photographs (many in color) explaining the origins, award regulations, design, and the badges themselves as well as the manufacturers involved in their production. Also contained in both of these two volumes are an extensive bibliography, Internet resources, and a list of LDO and Prasidialkanzlei numbers. Both authors provide photographs from different angles showing any noteworthy details on the badges, clasps, cloth versions, pennants, and miniatures. If you are a serious military collector or just a student of World War II, this two-volume set establishes a standard that all other books on this subject will have to be judged. --Lt. Colonel Robert A. Lynn, Florida Guard
