This is a book of deceptively simple stories, written and illustrated by an artist who believes there is more to life than the outer world. Arlene Graston has worked in television and publishing, designed everything from gold and diamond jewelry in Paris to original show posters on Broadway, and seen her originals exhibited in prestigious art fairs in New York and London. Why would such a sophisticated, successful artist in a technological society create a book so gentle? Arlene believes that when the mind is free of fear, even for the shortest while, all the Light of the Universe will shine through. Our imagination is the primary quality of Life. We are Imagination—co-creators with the Infinite Universe, but not inventors. All we can ever invent already exists as potential. Life awaits our participation for its expression and ours. Through our focus, intention ... and feeling ... experience is formed while the Invisible One works out the details. We are told to meditate, to still the mind, to be empty. Good advice, hard to do. But transcendent imagery combined with tender stories free of worldly cleverness and dread can cause a break from the world. In such a place of safety the mind lets go of fear. Uplifting reverie within Beauty and Kindness is another way to meditate, and it has the added benefit of bringing us joy, comfort and delight. That is why an unusual book like THE CHILDREN’S PROMISE can heal. That is why it was written and is being shared.

About the Author:

ARLENE GRASTON was born in Reims, France, to an American father and French mother giving her a dual nationality. She began her career with the haute couture house of Nina Ricci in Paris, where she apprenticed as a fashion designer and later designed jewelry. In her early twenties Arlene came to America where she established her own graphic design studio. Her commercial work appeared in numerous national publications including VOGUE, HARPER'S BAZAAR, WWD, and THE NEW YORK TIMES. She also designed the posters for the original Broadway productions of BUBBLING BROWN SUGAR and EUBIE! among others. However, as her success in the commercial world spiraled higher, Arlene, an entirely self-taught artist, found herself more and more drawn to the magical images that have pervaded her heart, mind and soul since childhood. In recent years she turned away from the design work to concentrate entirely on her own art. Arlene's books include DO YOU REMEMBER? (Visibles), SPECIAL FRIENDS (Bantam), THUMBELINA (Doubleday) and IN EVERY MOON THERE IS A FACE (Illumination Arts), which won Foreword Magazine's Gold Medal for Best Children's Picture Book of the Year and was a finalist for the Independent Publisher Book Awards. Her artwork is represented by the Jane Kahan Gallery in New York City. Arlene Graston lives with her husband in New York City. She may be contacted through her website: arlenegraston.com.
