Julianne Burton-Carvajal received her Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from Yale University. Residing in Santa Cruz from 1974 to 1998, she retired from UCSC in 2010 after teaching Latin American literature and film there for 35 years. Her encore career as a as curator of exhibitions began when she founded La Galería de Casa Latina in the former Merrill College Library building. Since 2000, she has developed exhibitions combining California history and art for museums and galleries between San Francisco and Santa Barbara, including the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. During that same period, she has authored and edited eight books and a number of articles on artists in regional history.
