Gentlemen of my acquaintance att present 83 in this Colledge are Mr Thomas Bayly and Mr James Bayly his Brother, Dr Perbury, Mr Nichols, Mr Laud of Hayden now dead, and in former dayes Mr Brown a great Sympler now dead also, Mr Joseph Harmour and Mr Baker a man of Estate in ye west near Bristoll; I fell acquainted with these Gentlemen at Cambridge when I went thither with Mr Baker of All Souls to see the University. S' Mary Magdalen Hall, commonly called Marlyn Hall, was built by William of Wainfleete, Bishop of Winchester, the flounder of ye adjoyning Colledge in 1480, only for a Grammar School, but both )-buildings and number of Students encreasing. ffirst it was called Grammar, but afterwards Magdalen, Hall. William Levitt, D:D: is their present Principle, ffor Schollars of this Hall: I were once in the Company of Mr Hyde, the Ld Chancellor Hydes Son, who among others was drowned or cast away in the late voyage or pafsage of the Duke of York from England towards Scotland. Mr Brock well another Schollar of my acquaintance att present of this Hall, and Mr Southby M John Southby's Son of Abbingdon, M Stephens, Mr Good who liues at Broad Chalk six miles beyond Salisbury, an acquaintance of Madam Aubere's in the same town, who once gave me hearty welcome at her house. As to ye Phisick Garden & its Rarityes of that nature, since it x8 stands on ground lately purchased from Magdalen Colledge, it may now justly challenge a remembrance, & that you may haue a true character of its work & beauty take here an account oft from him y now keeps it, the skilfull and Ingenious Gardener himselfe, my friend Mr Jacob B...
