Joanna Stephens is the Daughter of a Gentleman of a good Estate and Family in Berkshire. About twenty Years ago she accidentally met with a Receipt for the Stone, consisting of Egg-shells dryed in an Oven and powdered, which she administred o several Persons. After some Trials made with this she began to burn the Egg-shells j and burnc them sometimes to Blackness only, sometimes till this Blackness was changed into a grey Colour, which approached so much the nearer to perfect "Whiteness, as they were continued longer in the Fire, or its Heat more intense: Her Method as this time was to give of the Powder of Eggshells thus burnt black or grey, as much as would lie upon a Shilling three times a-day; and it appeared to her that this Powder was more efficacious in proportion as the Egg-fliells were more burnt. But finding that it often caused great Costivenessj she added a small quantity of Soap occasionally to each Dose, with a View both to prevent this Inconvenience, and also to forward the Dissolution of the Stone. And thus she continued giving the burnt Egg-shells with a small quantity of Soap for several Years, curing gravelly Complaints there by by, and-sometimes dissolving Stones in the Bladder. About 12 Years ago, she gave her Powder ih larger Dozes to one Mr. Coxon, adding thereto very frequently half an Ounce of Soap in Decoction.
