Excerpt: ... my exertions proved too great: my health gave way, and I resigned. Had I, however, been capable of sustaining the burden, I feel confident I should still have been the representative of my fellow-townsmen. Under these circumstances I came to this part of the country, looking upon Sussex as the most beautiful, healthy, and social district of the kingdom. I was living happily in the enjoyment of domestic life at Dale Park, when some friends, kindly overrating my pretensions, (cries of No! No!) urged me to become a Candidate for their suffrages. I was not unacquainted with Chichester. I knew that the Electors were independent men, who would not be prevailed upon to sacrifice their elective franchise by any base considerations, which too frequently obtain an ascendency in other places. I was, therefore, delighted with the idea of becoming the representative of such a City, and I may, with great truth say, that the hour I determined upon yielding to the wishes of my friends in this respect, was one of the happiest of my life. I feel an honest pride in the anticipation of representing a City which, by the disinterested manner in which its Electors always have exercised their elective franchise, has set a noble example to many other Cities and Towns of this kingdom. An example, which, had it been followed by them, many of the evils under which we now labour, would have been happily avoided. Such then are the circumstances which have led to my appearing amongst you. I will now state what are my political sentiments; and I will take occasion to observe, that I have never suffered a difference of political opinions to influence my feelings on other matters.
