J T The voyage out had not been, as he had antij i( cipated, a pleasant one--but very tempestuous. I ( He reached home, however, on the very day on which I ?he had expected to arrive, and though his health and ' strength were not so much improved by this visit, as had been hoped, he was enabled to resume and con'tinue his ordinary labours, although often weighed down by fatigue and weariness. He wrote to his friend Dr. Simpson, in January 1861 w "I hope it is not too late to wish you a happy New: j Year. May this year be to you a happy one in the best X sense of the word,--a year of rich blessing from the A-Lord, and diligent labours in His service! You and I 1--my old and dear friend--have spent not a few years of the space allotted to man, and many happy returns we may not expect to have; but since our Master, in His long suffering, is still permitting us to continue at our several posts, may He give us grace to redeem what remains of our time, by a more diligent and earnest improvement of those opportunities of usefulness, with which it has pleased Him so abundantly to favour us both! The earthly tabernacle must by and by come down, and we shall have warnings from time to time. Soon after I parted from you last, I had an attack of illness which shook me much,--one which, I thought, might have prevented my future usefulness. He in whose hands I am, has, however, been better to me than I feared, and I am again,--if not vigorous,--yet able to go about my ordinary work as before. At our last Synod, a retrograde step was taken in regard to the Union among Presbyterians, and perhaps it was as well, as it plainly appears that...
