What is here said theresore of Jesus being in heaven, is only sigurative language, and is by no means to be understood literally; as is he had been actually in heaven, and came down from thence; tho', as has been observed, what is not at all unnatural to suppose, that during his communication with God subsequent to his baptism, he might imagine that he had actually been in heaven, and theresore had actually comedown from thence. Least of all are we authorized to inser from such expressions as these that Jesus had pre.existed, and had been in fome other wortd or state besore he came into this. N. B. 1 his verse and all that follows to the end ot the chapter, may be supposed to be the language of the evangelist, tho' 1 see no improbability in their being supposed to be the words of Jesus himself. 15. Here our Lord alludes to his death upon the cross, and the essect of saith in him, similar to the essect of the saith of the Israelites, when they looked towards the brazen serpent, which Moses exposed to their view in the wilderness. al. In this language our Lord reproves the incredulity of the Jewish nation in general, notwithstanding they had had abundant evidence of his divine mission. At this time however, they had seen but sew of his miracles, and theresore the observation will better suit the tharacter of the evangelist who wrote a long time aster ail the events, unless we suppose this part of the history to to be out ofits place, and that it ought to have been introduced among the events of the last passover.
