Excerpt: Baghdad - There have been several rival proposals as to its specific etymology. The most reliable and most widely accepted among these is that the name is a Persian language compound made of two elements: Bag "god" + dd "given", translating to "God-given" or "God's gift", whence Modern Persian Badd. The nearby town of Muqdadiyah on the Diyala river presents the same construction, albeit, the term Mugh (Persian for a Magi) is replaced for Bagh (God) in Baghdad, making Muqdadiyah to stand for "Magi-given", "Magi's gift.".
