Excerpt: ... 2. Diversity In The Unity Of Christian Virtue, (a.) Diversity Of Christian Character. § 96. The unity of Christian virtue is not at all inconsistent with that diversity which we observe in the mental framework of men. Virtue will not destroy the distinctions of individual life, but it will permeate and transform them; and in doing this it puts the natural disposition under discipline in order to make it serviceable to its highest ends. This holds good in reference to the differences of race and nationality. In the state of regeneration the Spirit of God controls and quickens these differences. Upon this control, exercised by the Holy Spirit upon the natural endowments of man, rests the diversity of the ordinary spiritual gifts, and of the peculiar missions intrusted to men for the accomplishment of the manifold purposes of the Kingdom of God. This diversity of gifts and characters in the Kingdom of God is an element of the greatest importance. (b.) Diversity Of Christian Virtues And Virtuous Acts. a. The Christian Virtues. § 97. In the virtuous life of a Christian is found the proof of his true conversion, of his having indeed become united with the will of God. Every virtuous act must be the deed of the whole man, a whole-souled act, but like as the Law in its unity embraces a variety, so life consists of a variety of functions and activities. The one essence of virtue unfolds itself into a variety of virtues. They are only the different modifications and applications of one and the same power of cognition and will, corresponding to the various and manifold relations of human life. (2 Pet. 1:5, &c.)
