Jdefore we enter upon those Anecdotes, taken from the historical annals of China, we shall give a short sketch of the ancient state of this country, which for its power, extent, and long Recession of Sovereigns, is so well worthy attention; and which may be said to have subsisted as a great B Empire, Empire, for so many ages, distinct and unconnected from the rest of the world. .... Its geographical situation is as follows:--The Empire of China is situated in a temperate and salubrious climate, in the Western part of Asia, and in a manner separated from the rest of the globe; extending from South to North 1380, and from East to West, 900. miles. It is bounded by the ocean on the East and West; and on the North and South by a chain of barren rocks, on which side likewise the great wall proved an additional ditional defence, before this country and Tartary acknowledged the fame supreme head. The origin of the Chinese Empire is so obscured by time, that many of the accounts of it are envelopped in fable and error? which, together with the little intercourse that ever subsisted between these people and other nations, renders the truth more difficult to attain. It is, however, generally admitted, that a succession of their Sovereigns or Emperors has continued nearly four thousand years, and whose descent is traced from the B 2 descendants descendants of Noah, who were dispersed throughout Asia, and penetrated as far Westward as China, where they established themselves, and peopled this country. According to the manner of the Patriarchs, the fathers and elders of families, were the only Sovereigns then known; to whom longevity, numerous flocks, and personal character, obtained them a still greater authority, and soon added more unlimited power.
