The original meaning of ©tt)tanj(e), M.H.G. schranz is 'cleft,' 'rift,' hence it denoted 'a slashed garment,' 'an overdressed young man (with slashed sleeves),' 'a fop,' 'a parasite.' From §ubetn are derived tctS ®evucel 'the rabble' (cf. 1. 955) and tie $ubelet. fc$4nten is probably used here for the sake of the rime instead of fcjitnten which we should expect in this context. It is, however, not to be supposed that f$Snken is merely a Swabian spelling representing the literary fc$inken (in the Swabian pronunciation of Schiller's time rimes such as fcSmmert: ttrimmert, ©efitngen: fcfnringen were possible and actually occur in Schiller's early poems), but Sc...
