There are many Gentlemen's seats, and ornamented villas, in the neighbourhood of this town; and, when the tide is in, the view from the bridge is an object worthy of notice. Among the former is Morton, the seat of L. W. Buck,' Esq.; Porthill, belonging to Captain Keats; Lenwood the seat of Major Wren; and Yeo-Vale the seat of Mrs. Morison. APPLEDORE. At the confluence of the Taw and Torridge, two miles below Bideford, is Appledore, in the parish of Northam, remarkable only for its antiquity and situation. It was called by the Saxons Apletreo; and we are informed.by various historians, that during the reign of King Alfred, a signal victory was obtained over the Danes by the Britons under Odunethe 1st, Earl of Devon. Hubba a Danish Warrior, landed near this place with thirty-three sail of ships, and laid siege to Kenwith Castle, (anciently spelt Cynvit), since called Henrich Lodge--Hubba was slain there; and a spot in the neighbourhood still retains the name of Hubblestone, from its being the burial place of that enterprising chieftain. The site of this castle is now unknown, but it is imagined by some historians to be what is called Henny or Hamborough Castle, in the adjoining parish of Abbotsham. In a small work written by R. J. Vidal, Esq., of Cornborough, near Bideford, the author has drawn some plausiable conclusions as to the identity of this once celebrated castle. He imagines that not only can the site of it be at present distinguished, but also the enemy's entrenchments, and line of retreat adopted by the defeated Danes, to regain their ships, after the death of their leader Hubba, and the loss of their ban...
