Furthermore, the authors observe that the depressed economic state of the Indian countryside is a major contributing factor to educational deprivation, and that this has been exacerbated by aspects of India's caste system. Throughout the book, the authors draw on experiences from related movements in the United States, Philippines, and Ceylon in seeking possible solutions for India's educational crisis.
