Excerpt from William Thornton and Negro Colonization

Porto Rico, lies a group of about one hundred small islands, some mere rocks in the sea furnishing no sustenance for human beings, and some of larger size where a few planters raise sugar and cotton. These are the Virgin Islands discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage in 1494, and named by him in honor of the Eleven Thousand Virgin Martyrs of St. Ursula; but this pious name did not prevent them from being, in the middle of the seventeenth century, the favorite resort of those picturesque desperadoes, the pirates of the Spanish Main, who found in their numerous inlets and harbors which were dangerous to pursuing navigators a safe refuge from the consequences of their crimes. The largest of the islands is Tortola, the Turtle Dove, a beautiful little domain, twenty-four miles long and five miles wide, with rich valleys and a range of high hills. Travellers seldom go to Tortola now, planting is unprofitable, the island is almost deserted; but in the eighteenth century it flourished, and a few planters and numerous black slaves lived there prosperously and contentedly. In 1756 the whole population of the island was 460 white persons and negro slaves.1.
