Excerpt from A Study of the Reduction of Permanganic Acid by Manganese Dioxide: A Dissertation Presented to the Board of University Studies of the Johns Hopkins University, for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
This is evidenced by the fact that if permanganate is decolorized as by the above reaction the loss of avail able oxygen is in the proportion indicated by the equa tion,(l)that is three-fifths of the active oxygen is evolved. That instability of permanganate solutions is to be ascribed to this reaction is shown by the fact that solutions carefully freed from oxide have remained perfectly constant during long periods of time and in varying conditions of temperaturefz)

This book delves into a remarkable phenomenon observed by the author, where an unexpected release of oxygen occurs when manganese dioxide and permanganic acid interact with gaseous reducing agents. The investigation uncovers the underlying cause of this reaction, revealing its intricate molecular dynamics. The author demonstrates how manganese dioxide molecules, formed through the reaction, exhibit a tendency to increase their complexity, leading to the decomposition of permanganic acid and the subsequent release of oxygen. This detailed exploration of molecular interactions and reaction dynamics enhances our understanding of the interplay between different chemical species and their impact on the outcome of chemical reactions.
