Excerpt from Literature a Lecture by John Henry, Cardinal Newman
The Questions and Studies will be best taken up under the guidance of the instructor, to whom the student will look for an explanation of terms, if explanation be necessary, and especially for a fuller statement of the topics of inquiry than the limits of this edition allow. The editor, it is need less to say, has had no intention of making the Studies do service for a text-book of rhetoric or literary theory. He has accordingly made free use of terms current in the English scientific rhet orie of to-day on the assumption that the student has or should have a knowledge of them from the text-book of rhetoric placed in his hands.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the nature of literature as a human endeavor, delving into the relationship between thought and language. The author argues that literature is essentially an expression of personal thoughts and feelings rather than merely a collection of words on a page. This idea is discussed through an analysis of the works of classic writers such as Homer, Virgil, and Shakespeare, highlighting the influence of the author's experiences and emotions on their writing. The author also contrasts literature with science, emphasizing that literature deals with the subjective realm of human experience while science focuses on objective truths. Additionally, the book examines the concept of literary style and argues that it is not merely an artificial technique but an integral part of the author's expression. The author concludes by reflecting on the significance of literature, emphasizing its power to connect individuals, shape national character, and preserve wisdom across generations.
