Excerpt from The Logic of Money: An Essay on the Principles of Currency, and the Theory of Bimetallism

Money is the name given to any Commodity which is used as a general medium of exchange for other com modities. The qualities which adapt a material for best discharging the functions of money are, firstly, that it should be something which is an object of general desire secondly, that it should be of a less perishable nature than other Commodities; and thirdly, that it should possess the capability of being easily divided into homogeneous parts. Gold and Silver have been the metals found to unite in the highest degree these three requisites, viz., desirability - durability - and divisibility.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the history and evolution of money, tracing its transformation from a mere medium of exchange to a multifaceted economic force with a profound impact on society. The author provides an in-depth analysis of the nature of currency, with a focus on the interplay between silver and gold as the primary metals used in coinage throughout history. The book explores the distinction between money as a commodity and as a measure of value, examining how the intrinsic value of precious metals influences their role in monetary systems. The author charts the historical evolution of currency, from ancient silver-based economies to the adoption of gold as the international standard of the modern era. Through a comprehensive examination of the economics of money, the book sheds light on the fluctuations in the gold-silver ratio and their impact on trade and domestic economies. The author argues that the intrinsic value of currency is an illusion, and that its true value lies in its purchasing power, challenging conventional wisdom on the nature of money. Ultimately, this book provides a nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between money, value, and the dynamics of international trade, offering valuable insights for economists, historians, and anyone seeking to comprehend the intricate workings of our global monetary system. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
