Excerpt from The Karma-Mimamsa
Not rarely in the Brahmanas, especially in later texts like the Kausitaki, the term Mimamsa occurs as the designation of a discussion on some point of ritual practise. The sacrifice left innumerable opportunities for divergence of usage in detail, and the texts decide in favour of one or the other alternative, on the strength of the reasons familiar to the Brahmanas, in special the symbolical significance attaching to the action recommended. There is a vital difference between this form of Mimar'nsa and that of the classical karma-mimamsa school, in the fact that in the former the appeal to authority, and the necessity of reconciling apparent discrepancies of authority, are entirely lacking. But the tendency to surrender judgment in favour of tradition may be traced in the care with which in the Sotopatha and the Kausitaki Brahmanas the name of the teacher is adduced in support of the doctrines expounded in the older style the reasonings stand by themselves, commended by their intrinsic value.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the history and philosophy of the Karma-Mimamsa school of Hindu thought. The author examines the origins and evolution of the Karma-Mimamsa system, tracing its roots back to the ancient Brahmanas and its development into a fully-fledged school of thought. The book explores the key philosophical questions that the Karma-Mimamsa school grappled with, such as the nature of knowledge, the nature of reality, and the relationship between the individual soul and the divine. The author delves into the intricate details of how the Karma-Mimamsa school interpreted Vedic scriptures, particularly the Brahmanas, in order to establish a set of rules governing the performance of rituals. The book examines the different interpretations offered by key figures within the school, such as Prabhakara and Kumarila Bhatta, highlighting their contrasting viewpoints on key concepts like perception and inference. The book offers valuable insights into the complex world of ancient Indian thought, revealing how the Karma-Mimamsa school sought to reconcile ritual practice with philosophical inquiry, and how its teachings influenced the development of other major schools of Hindu philosophy, such as the Vedanta and the Nyaya.
