Excerpt from Selections From Papers Contributed to the Spectator: Edited With Introd, and Notes by Thomas Arnold

Addison and Steele were the chief contributors, and in nearly equal proportions, to the Spectator. Including the eighty\ numbers of the eighth volume of the resuscitated Spectator, the publication consisted of 63 5 papers. Of these, according tq the computation of Dr. Drake, 274 were from the pen of Addison, and 240 from that of Steele. Eustace Budgell wrote 37, John Hughes 11, and Henry Grove four papers. Two or three, or even four, papers are supposed to be by Pope, but they cannot all be identified with certainty. More than a score of other writers are credited with the composition of one or two papers, or parts of papers. Fifty-three papers remain, for which all the researches of the last century editors were unable to find authors. On all these matters full information may be found in Dr. Drake's Euayr, from which, and from other sources, we extract some account of the ascertained contributors, which those who do not care for biographical details may skip.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a compelling intellectual exploration of the prevalent themes, literary trends, and philosophical foundations found throughout the essays of Joseph Addison which originally appeared in the 18th-century periodical The Spectator. Addison's writings, characterized by their amiable and often humorous tone, often focused on targeting the social ills of his day, including vanity, superstition and social pretension. This book provides the cultural and historical context that will orient today's readers to Addison's topics and aims. Ultimately, this book shows how Addison's essays not only sparked a new era of literary satire but also provided insightful commentary on human nature, morals and the role of public discourse, and how these ideas remain both timeless and thought-provoking. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
