The writer of the following chapters has found it advisable not strictly to confine his attention to actually achieved legislation, but sometimes to deal with mere schemes and projects of historical importance. The law of Married Women's Property, on the other hand, has been altogether omitted, inasmuch as it has already formed the subject of two Yorke Prize Essays. In the subjoined list are enumerated the principal authorities consulted; these and other authorities are separately referred to in footnotes. The writer may state, however, that by far the greatest part of his information has been obtained directly and laboriously from the Blue Books mentioned at the head of the list.
