It seems to have escaped your correspondents that there is a word in the French language, manna, applied to a particular sort of basket. Littré defines it as Panier d'osier plus long que large, Oil l'on met le linge, la vaisselle. In old French the word is found as mande. Littré gives the etymology as follows Wallon monte picard et Hainaut made; has-lat. Manda; du germanique anc. Haut-allem. Manne anglo-sax.
