Unwilling to return to the United States without first becoming somewhat acquainted with the coun try in which we had so long resided, I tendered my resignation, and set out on a tour through the central and southern portions of Chili.
After several weeks spent in traveling through parts of the country that have frequently been de scribed by others, I reached Concepcion, from which place I subsequently started to visit the Araucanian Indians, who form the subject of the following pages.
