Sinossi

Excerpt from Alternating Generations: A Biological Study of Oak Galls and Gall Flies

The originality of the matter, and the important light which it threw on some of the great biological problems of the day, induced me to ask his permission to publish it in an English dress. I have to thank him for the generous manner in which he placed his work, and the beautiful drawings which accompanied it, at my disposal. Unfortunately the stones from which the illustrations were printed had been broken up, but I venture to think that they have been very faithfully reproduced.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of oak gall flies, those tiny insects that create elaborate growths on oak trees. The author meticulously details the history of scientific inquiry surrounding these galls, tracing back to the pioneering work of early naturalists who attempted to explain their mysterious origins. The book explores the various theories surrounding the origins of the galls, from spontaneous generation to metempsychosis and the more recent theories of dimorphism and metagenesis. The author then focuses on the complex life cycle of these insects, unraveling the mysteries of their alternating generations. The book presents a groundbreaking analysis of the authorââ â¢s own research into the mechanisms behind these fascinating transformations, examining the intricate workings of the insectsââ ⢠reproductive processes, especially the roles of the polar bodies and the transfer of hereditary traits. The book ultimately sheds light on the evolutionary forces that have shaped the remarkable relationship between oak gall flies and the oak trees they inhabit. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Codice articolo 9781332098361_0
