In the autumn of 1862 the United States steam gunboat Miami, after having done picket duty on the James river, was ordered from Hampton Roads to the Sounds of North Carolina. The M iami had been built somewhat hastily at the Navy Yard, Philadelphia, and was, I believe, the first to be launched of a class of double - enders, so called. She was a large paddle-wheel steamer, Witha long flush deck, and furnished with steering gear and a rudder at the bow as well as stern, so that she would run forward or backward, an important ad vantage in river service, for which this class of light-draught vessels was designed.
