Das vorliegende Buch ist keine Biographie im eigentlichen Sinne des Wortes. Um einen bedeutenden Mann als Mittelpunkt gruppirt sich ein Bild des politischen und literarischen, theilweise auch des geselligen Lebens seiner Zeit, im Einzelnen skizzenhaft, doch mit einem Detail, welches die Geschichte des Landes nicht Zu geben vermag. Schon deshalb hätte Menioirenforin nahe gelegen, wäre dieselbe auch nicht infolge vieljährigen Zusammenseins und vertrautester Beziehungen Zu Dem natiiislicli erschienen, dessen Lebensgang den Faden liefert. Aus diesem Grunde wolle der Leser entschuldigen, wenn in diesen Blättern das Ich häufig vorkommt, dem man sonst in meinen Arbeiten wol selten beoeonet. Es handelt sich eben um Miterlebtes, und so beruhen, von den dreissiger Jahren an, die Schilderungen von Personen wie von Ereignissen fast überall auf eigner Bekanntschaft und Anschauung.
