Excerpt from Renan's Life of Jesus
The following translation Of Renan's Vie de je'sns is made from the thirteenth edition of the complete work, which embodies the author's more mature views Of his subject. SO far 351 am aware, the English renderings already existent are either made from earlier editions, or from an abridged version which Renan prepared for popular reading. Owing to the limits Of the Series to which this volume belongs, inclusion of the author's elaborate preface, introduction, appendix, and notes has been found impossible. These features appeal however to the specialist rather than to the general reader, and, for the latter, their absence scarcely impairs the interest Of the work itself. In an edition for English readers, I have thought it desirable to collate all the author's biblical quotations with the Revised Version of the English Bible. And to give the references.
