Excerpt from An Attempt to Discriminate the Styles of Architecture in England, From the Conquest to the Reformation: With a Sketch of the Grecian and Roman Orders

The object of the present publication has been to furnish, at a price which shall not present an obstacle to extensive circulation, such a view of the principles of architecture, more particularly that of the British Isles, as may not only be placed with advantage in the hands of the rising generation, but also afford the guardians of ecclesiastical edifices such clear discriminative remarks on the buildings now existing, as may enable them to judge with considerable accuracy of the restorations necessary to be made in those venerable edifices that are under their peculiar care; and also, by leading them to the study of such as still remain In a perfect state, to render them more capable of deciding on the various designs for churches in imitation of the English styles which may be presented to their choice.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is an architectural treatise on the origins of Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian architectural orders, written for artisans and young students of architecture. The author provides a detailed historical account of each order, describing their distinct features, key components, and measurable proportions. Whether you are an aspiring architect or a history buff, this book offers valuable information and measurements from the author's own research on dozens of structures, both Ancient Greek and Roman. The author explores the historical development of each order, emphasizing how Greek styles gave way to the Romanesque and eventually, to the Gothic in a fascinating journey through evolution. The commonalities between the orders are examined as well, especially in regard to the ways in which the Romans adapted and reinterpreted Greek models.
