Excerpt from Maps Reproduced as Glass Transparencies: Selected to Represent the Development of Map-Making From the First to the Seventeenth Century
IN this exhibit the attempt has been made to illustrate the development of map-making, and the expansion of geographical knowledge as cartographically represented, from Roman days to modern times. The forty-one maps selected are typical. The fact, however, is recognized that in so limited a number of reproductions many of the details and peculiarities, which are characteristic of the maps drawn during this long period, do not appear.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents 41 maps that trace the development of map making and geographical knowledge from Roman times to the 20th century. Starting with early Roman maps like the Peutinger Table, that illustrate the world as then conceived, it progresses to more recent maps that exhibit more precise representations of the globe. The author traces the evolution of map making techniques, including portolan charts and world maps, showing how they reflect the changing geographic knowledge of the time. The book positions medieval and early modern map making within the broader intellectual and cultural history of those eras, and discusses the influence of scholarly figures like Ptolemy and Martin Behaim. A fascinating look at the history of maps and our ever-changing understanding of the planet.
